6 December 2017 By Alan Straton

I pose with a subject for only the THIRD time in my life. The 'lucky person' this time around was David 'Witty' Witt - the skipper of Sun Hung Kai Scallywag taking part in the #volvooceanrace practise race in #capetown AND I got to play skipper after the race all the way back to port. David Kindly enough refused my offer of an appendage in grateful thanks from myself. We came 5th in the Winward Leeward race after two general recalls and a not so pleasing third start. In case you are wondering … [Read more...] about I pose with a subject for only the THIRD time in my life. The ‘lucky person’ this time…

The Race to Cape Town as Yachts EAT up the Miles

22 November 2017 By Alan Straton

Steve Hayles

The Spanish crew of Leg 2 leaders MAPFRE were cautiously keeping one eye on their rivals and the other on Cape Town on Wednesday as they came within just over 800 miles of the finish line. Confounding predictions the yachts are almost two full days ahead of schedule on their way to Cape Town. And, in a strange twist of fate, the leading yacht has 822 nautical miles to Cape Town whilst Alan has the same number of kilometres to travel to Cape Town on Thursday for the expected arrival early on … [Read more...] about The Race to Cape Town as Yachts EAT up the Miles

Wind vs Distance in Sprint for Cape Town

18 November 2017 By Alan Straton

Maciel Cicchetti

A 130 nautical mile lateral split has opened up in the Volvo Ocean Race fleet on Friday as the teams trade off better wind with shorter distance in a bid to get to Cape Town first. Bouwe Bekking's Team Brunel were today the most westerly boat having gybed onto starboard at 0900 UTC, with Vestas 11th Hour Racing following suit shortly after. For several hours Bekking's Dutch-flagged boat was actually pointing in the opposite direction to Cape Town, much to the amazement of some race fans … [Read more...] about Wind vs Distance in Sprint for Cape Town

With Monday's Equator crossings already a fading memory for the Volvo Ocean Race crews, gone too is any respite, however brief, from the relentless action that's characterising the second leg. Many sailors awoke on Tuesday sporting new haircuts or with the faint whiff of days-old food about them, or both. These were the only reminders of the momentary reprieve that came in the form of the traditional ceremonies to induct first timers into the court of King Neptune. However … [Read more...] about Back to Business and the charge South

After a fast and furious opening to Leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race, the fleet is settling into a groove on Monday, with navigators and skippers already facing the first of many critical decisions on this race from Lisbon to Cape Town. Watch highlights from the windy start of Leg 2 Today will give us the first indication as to how far west the teams want to set up for their approach to the doldrums. “We’re planning another gybe to the west to take advantage of the shifts,” explained Juan … [Read more...] about Is West Best?

The ONLY way open to a VIP Guest to leave a speeding yacht – JUMP!

6 November 2017 By Alan Straton

Mapfre Brunel Cape Town

It is tradition to put VIP Guests and Sponsors on yachts at the start of races such as the Volvo Ocean Race. These incredibly lucky people get to experience first hand the adrenalin associated with a high intensity start and that initial first dash for the next port of call. The 'problem' comes in when that VIP has to disembark as the speed and aspect of these racing machines does not lend itself well to gently stepping off and onto a chase boat. HENCE - we now have the JUMPER who has to take a … [Read more...] about The ONLY way open to a VIP Guest to leave a speeding yacht – JUMP!
