So, when someone sends you an anonymous e-mail with the above subject line what would you do? Of course I opened it and saw that it contained TWO links: One to a a scientific paper published on 2 April 2001 by OS Fatoki and S Mathabatha from the Department of Chemistry, University of Fort Hare, Alice 5700, South Africa titled; "An assessment of heavy metal pollution in the East London and Port Elizabeth harbours" And another to a Devon Koen article on Herald Live, titled; "Pollution … [Read more...] about Blue Flag, My Ass – thanks Transnet

Yacht Fling

Amidst all the hype around Port Elizabeth's Blue Flag beaches a syndicate of 4 people has gained what I am sure is a first for the country and definitely for Port Elizabeth. Blue Flag status was today awarded to Yacht Fling which is part owned by the ABYC Sailing Commodore, Morgan Griffiths. Fling is a Sadler 26 design and a personal leisure boat sailing out of the Algoa Bay Yacht Club. She has a syndicate of 4 owners who all are committed to respecting and caring for the … [Read more...] about Port Elizabeth Yacht gains Blue Flag Status

Humewood Beach Blue Flag Status Celebrated

2 November 2011 By Alan Straton

Griffith and Lobishe

Humewood Beach is once again flying its flags at full mast, after it was announced last week that it has regained its internationally recognized Blue Flag status. "Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism's mandate is to market the city as a preferred tourism destination - regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally. And, we can only do this effectively if the organization has valuable and appealing assets to market. A Blue Flag beach is certainly one such asset. A beach as beautiful as … [Read more...] about Humewood Beach Blue Flag Status Celebrated

Executive Director of EDRS, Zolile Sizawana was; "...excited to have once again gained Blue Flag Status for Humewood beach", and continued by saying that it had been a "tough job in light of the financial constraints the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has been labouring … [Read more...] about Humewood Regains Blue Flag Status

I Wouldn’t Swim Off of Hobie or Kings Beach for a While

24 March 2011 By Alan Straton

Apparently a sea-going tour operator was filmed in Algoa Bay today chumming for sharks. Now the fact that said tour operator had a film crew onboard that is connected to an internationally known and veneered television station and that the permit carried by said tour operator does not allow for any such activity is not enough. The chumming activity 'apparently' took place along Hobie Beach - Port Elizabeth's erstwhile Blue Flag beach and very popular swimming spot that hosts the very … [Read more...] about I Wouldn’t Swim Off of Hobie or Kings Beach for a While

Marry Me (PE) Lin Sampson

17 January 2011 By Alan Straton

Writing for yesterday's Sunday Crimes Lifestyle insert, Lin Sampson had two lists of things: one that we should pay attention to (Underrated) and one that we should forget (Overrated). Of course the only one that resonated with me was the following one in the Underrated list: Port Elizabeth, which has the best beaches in the world. May I please, Lin, add one other to the Underrated list? Lin Sampson, for being an astute observer of the obvious and having the courage to publish said … [Read more...] about Marry Me (PE) Lin Sampson
