CPI unchanged in April

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April remained unchanged at 5.9% year-on-year, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. "Headline CPI in April 2013 was 5.9%. This rate was the same as the corresponding annual rate of 5.9% in March 2013," said Stats SA. Analysts had expected CPI to come in at 5.7%. In a research note earlier, Standard Bank economist Shireen Darmalingam said the bank estimated that CPI would rise to 5.8% year-on-year. April Retail Trade Sales Weaken

Retail trade sales weakened in April with the year-on-year rate falling to 1% compared to a revised 6.7% in March, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) said on Wednesday. Market expectation was that retail sales would show growth of 4.5%. Figures for April were boosted by the number of public holidays as well as additional school holidays after the Easter weekend, according to Stats SA. April Motor Vehicle Sales Increase by 10.5%

Vehicle sales registered relatively strong gains in April, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) said on Thursday. "Aggregate Industry sales had improved by 4 034 units or 10.5% to 42 617 vehicles from 38 583 units in April last year, well above the growth rate in industry total sales of 6.9% for the four months of the year," said the association.
