New Rector for Saint Philip’s Mission Church, Richmond Hill
St Philip's Mission Church began in about 1872 amongst Dutch speaking families which had moved from the Western Cape to Port Elizabeth. The first church began in a wool store in Strand Street, and then moved to the Mechanic's Institute in Donkin Street. Soon a lack of space took them to St Paul's Boys' Schoolroom. We have stayed in the Parsons Hill Area for nigh on 12 years now and are in close proximity to two 'competing' churches who ring their bells every Sunday to call their adherents to prayer. Now the one right opposite us will ring the bell between 32 and 52 times (Ja, I am a bit weird as I like to count stuff like an idiot - but not a savant!), the other has pulled itself into the 21st century and pushes a button to sound it's clarion call electronically.
