Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomes the ruling of the Constitutional Court that confirms citizenship of persons born outside South Africa where one of the parents is a South African citizen. Previously Home Affairs had chosen to interpret section 2(1)(b) of the amended Citizenship Act to deny citizenship to persons born outside of South Africa before 1 January 2013 where one of the parents is a South African citizen. Dear MyPE The Democratic Alliance (DA) can reveal that the Department of Home Affairs has no plans to roll out Smart ID Cards to indigent and unemployed South Africans. This was revealed to the DA in a Parliamentary reply by the Minister of Home Affairs. The reply further states that Government will only provide free Smart ID Cards to the elderly and first time applicants.
