The Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area (MPA) officially comes into effect tomorrow - Thursday 1 August. It is one of three new MPAs within South African National Parks (SANParks) which were gazetted by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) on 23 May 2019. The other two are the Robben Island MPA (to be managed by Table Mountain National Park) and the Namaqua National Park MPA, which form part of 20 new national MPAs. The newly expanded area of the Addo Marine Protected Area (MPA) comes into effect on 1 August 2019. From that date SANPARKS rangers in the employ of Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) will be policing the newly declared Marine Protected Area. Essentially the area stretches from Bird Island to just short of the Nqura Harbour Wall and includes all islands in Algoa Bay. The area also includes the navigable reaches of the Sundays River. Two open days meant to provide clarity and information on the newly-proclaimed Addo Elephant National Park Marine Protected Area (MPA) will take place in Nelson Mandela Bay next week.
