The NMMU Music Department has announced the re-establishment of their university symphony orchestra. The orchestra was last heard in 2005 and in celebrating NMMU’s 10th year Anniversary. The re-launching of the orchestra would be in time for the festivities planned next year when the Music Department will be celebrating its 50th anniversary.

On Sunday, 22 November, 15:00 at the NMMU South Campus Auditorium, the Port Elizabeth community will be able to experience and be a part of this important event that will not only promote orchestral music but orchestral music to our youth. The university orchestra, under the baton of Grant Snyman (22), will lead the audience in a balanced, exciting and fun programme at their inaugural concert.
Snyman is not only a final year honours music student but has also been chosen to progress to the semi-finals of the prestigious Len van National Conducting Competition to be held in Cape Town in February 2016. Snyman under the guidance and support of Prof Erik Albertyn, HOD of Music, has been able to pull together a strong core of university students to restart the NMMU Symphony Orchestra and have already got some special concerts planned for next year, including a side by side concert with the ECPO.
The first half of the concert will have audiences experiencing famous works by Strauss, Sibelius’s Andante Festivo and two Mozart concertos (horn and clarinet) performed by acclaimed lecturers from the NMMU Department of Music, Prof Erik Albertyn (horn) and woodwind lecturer, Gareth Williams (clarinet).
The second half will have audiences listening to some of the world’s most famous movie soundtracks, including the famous John Williams’ Stars Wars, The Hobbit and Howard Shore’s The Lord of the Rings.
Tickets can be pre-purchased from the Music Department for R40 for adults, R20 for pensioners and R10 for scholars and students.
