Swinging into Spring is all about the bass. The double bass, that is. Coupled with a grand piano and served with a generous dollop of smooth vocals, it may be the taste that local lovers of fine live acoustic music have been waiting for.
‘Vintage Vol.1’ will be hosted by the NMMU Music Conservatoire in Bird Street on Friday 23 October.
The show is the first of a series of intimate live shows produced by TwoTone Music which will collectively be known as the TwoTone Sundowner Sessions.
The first show features TwoTone director and NMMU Jazz vocal lecturer Ulagh Williams on piano and vocals. She will be accompanied by Grant Allison (double bass) and Bevin Maschaka (drums).
‘TwoTone Music does many large events year round and people have grown accustomed to us playing party music’, says Williams. ‘What most people don’t know is that we love performing old school jazz, blues and other genres – we love to experiment with various acoustic styles.’
The TwoTone Sundowner Sessions is a return to bare bones music making across various genres. ‘We plan to showcase the versatility of the TwoTone band members’, Williams adds. ‘We are truly unique in that we can play a classical chamber concert in the morning, followed by a rowdy dance party in the evening! We are also planning to showcase my versatile vocal students from NMMU who will be making guest appearances. Performing live for an audience is a vital part of what they’re studying, and this is the perfect platform for them to venture into the professional performing arena.’
Vintage Vol.1 features songs made famous by artists like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Diana Krall, Stacey Kent and retro pop-jazz diva Caro Emerald.
Jazzy renditions of pop and soul hits will also be performed, as inspired by Postmodern Jukebox – a US jazz band which is leading the current retro-sound craze that has even non-jazz lovers swinging and bopping.
‘The venue is small (it seats only about 60 – 80 people cafe style) but we want it to be cosy and intimate- like being in an old fashioned jazz club. The idea is to draw lovers of fine music by featuring different artists with the band on a regular basis, whether it be jazz, folk, classical or blues – each session will be something fresh, with a new theme.’
Due to very limited seating, patrons are advised to pre-book to avoid disappointment.
There will be a cash bar and patrons are invited to bring along their own snacks.
The show will start at 19h00 and tickets cost R120. To book and for more information, please call Ulagh on 083 627 4686 or email info@twotonemusic.com.
