The Top 40 under 40 is a showcase of local business talent under the age of 40 compiled by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber (NMBBC).
Susan Potgieter (37), as Director of LifeLine in Port Elizabeth, is driven by her commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
Susan Potgieter is perfectly placed in her role as Director of LifeLine Port Elizabeth. Potgieter was appointed at the age of 30, making her the youngest director ever appointed to the organization. She is currently involved in expanding LifeLine’s award-winning youth project, VUTHA-Ignite the Fire, which tackles emotional wellness in teens.
Her focus for 2012 includes an investigation into the high rates of suicide in Eastern Cape schools, and Potgieter has completed the internationally-accredited Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training in preparation for this.
2009 saw Potgieter winning a Nedbank Local Hero award, while 2010 brought her a win in the Social Entrepreneurship category of the 2010 Business Women’s Association Regional Business Achiever Awards. Potgieter is also a trustee of the Friends of Van Staden’s Bridge Trust, which raises funds for the placement of cameras on a bridge that has seen many suicide attempts.
“I am a go-getter,” she says. “I work for what I believe in, and that’s building community heart for social change.”

The Top 40 Under 40 list, an NMBBC initiative, was compiled from nominations and selected by an independent panel at the NMBBC. The end result is a showcase of talented and ambitious young businesspeople from diverse sectors in Nelson Mandela Bay. From 7 December 2011, MyPE showcases one under 40 achiever a day.
