SuperGP Bike Racing Back at Scribante

The SuperGP Champions Trophy 2015 enters into its second year with seven national championship rounds taking place monthly across South Africa, from March to September in 2015. Following its debut year, the new format motorcycle championship has been restructured to accommodate the requests from competitors and manufactures to reduce costs of participating at a national level.  With majority of competitors being Gauteng based, the new championship schedule alternates between inland (home) races and coastal races.

This year’s championship also sees the introduction of the KTM SuperJunior category as announced in October last year. The four participating categories in 2015, being SuperGP, Super600, SuperM and SuperJuniors will kick off their respective championships on March 22nd at Phakisa Freeway near Welkom.

The full 2015 schedule is as follows:

  • Round 1: Free State SuperGP, Phakisa Freeway – 22nd March
  • Round 2: Tshwane SuperGP, Zwartkops – 12th April
  • Round 3: Western Cape SuperGP, Killarney – 17th May
  • Round 4: Mpumalanga SuperGP, Red Star – 14th June
  • Round 5: Nelson Mandela Bay SuperGP, Aldo Scribante – 26th July
  • Round 6: Delmas SuperGP, Red Star – 23rd August
  • Round 7: Kwa-Zulu Natal SuperGP, KZN – 20th September

The championship maintains its stand-alone format, with a two-day race weekend consisting of qualifying on Saturday and racing on Sunday, along the lines of the Superbike World Championship.

Stephen Watson, an Executive Director of GAS Sports, the managers and promoters of the SuperGP motorcycle championship series, said, “we have conducted a full review of our first season and have made some changes for 2015. The race day programme is much fuller with the addition of our new SuperJunior category and the calendar is easier on the competitors and teams from both a budgetary and logistics perspective.  We have some exciting announcements to come in the weeks leading up to the first round of the championship, including long-term sponsorship commitments which secure the championships for years to come.”
