This year’s Super 12 Club Rugby Competition is being contested by 6 clubs from the Eastern Province and 6 clubs from Border and promises to be a mouth-watering affair. Having received the thumbs-up from the Eastern Cape government, this provincial master-piece is bringing a welcome spark to the Eastern Cape club rugby scene. This weekend sees yet another round of anticipated big hits, running and expansive rugby and intense rivalries. Players on opposite sides are expected to bring a “no-holds-barred approach” to the field of play.
SAPS vs Gardens (Kemsley Park, PE: Saturday 12 February 2011)
A repeat of the 2009 Super 12 Club Rugby Final. There will be no love lost when these two sides meet: their recent encounters will add fire to an already heated match-up. After starting this year’s competition with 2 successive victories SAPS will be hoping that they can make the home ground advantage count in their favour as they search for their third victory in a row.
African Bombers vs Grahamstown Brumbies (Zwide Stadium, PE: Saturday 12 February 2011)
A classic rivalry: the match which was never had! Both teams were scheduled to meet each other in the final of the Adams Cup in 2010, but the match never took place. The Bombers, after their victory over the reigning Grand Challenge Champions, Progress, in their 1st round will be out to maintain their good start to the competition. The Grahamstown Brumbies campaign has not started well, having suffered two losses already in the competition they will be looking to exact revenge on a high-flying African Bombers team. One thing for sure: bragging rights will be on the line!
Progress vs Swallows (Central, Uitenhage: Saturday 12 February 2011)
Progress are the reigning Eastern Province Grand Challenge champions, and after a stuttering start to this year’s Super 12 Club Rugby campaign, they will be looking to get onto the front foot and string together consistent performances, especially after their victory over the Grahamstown Brumbies last week. Swallows will be making their way from Mdantsane and a victory over Progress in Uitenhage will give them a psychological edge for the rest of the competition.
Park vs Winter Rose (Sisa Dukashe Stadium, Mdantsane: Saturday 12 February 2011)
Park have, over recent years, proved to be one of the most consistent teams hailing from the Eastern Province region having won 2 of the 3 finals that they’ve appeared in over the past 3 years. They will view last week’s loss to SAPS as a minor hurdle and will be looking at getting back to winning ways and their trip to the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane will not be an easy affair. Coming away with victory in this fixture will give them forward moment heading into the rest of the competition.
The other 2 remaining weekend fixtures will see 4 Border teams locked in regional derbies. Breakers will be pitted against the King Brumbies at the Mlungisi Stadium in Queenstown. The Berlin Tigers will be counting on home ground advantage when they try and claw their way to victory over Evergreen in match will be played in Berlin.
