Dear Editor
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay has put together a five-point plan that can be rolled out immediately to ensure the safety of tourists and residents during the Metro’s summer season.
Today, 22 November 2023, I was joined by DA NMB Spokesperson for Economic Development and Tourism, Cllr Renaldo Gouws, and DA NMB Spokesperson for SRAC, Cllr Sebenzile Rafani, in presenting this plan at the Hobie Beach Lifesaving Club in Gqeberha.

The Metro’s beachfront, which is the biggest draw card for tourist to visit Nelson Mandela Bay, has never been more dangerous.
People are being attacked and robbed at knife point while the streets are dark due to streetlight outages. There is also a total lack of safety procedures from the metro police and municipal department of safety and security at the beachfront.
The ANC/EFF/NA/PA coalition government has failed to put in place any viable safety plans except for the pie in the sky wish list for which they have no funding now.
Tourism over the summer season is one of the biggest income generators and job creators in the Metro. If tourists stay away, our economy will fail.
The DA’s plan can be implemented by the Metro immediately and contains the following steps:
- 24-hour metro police satellite office at the beachfront to be operational.
- Increased metro police and safety and security vehicle and foot patrols at the beachfront.
- Increased crime prevention operations in partnership with the metro police, traffic department, the police, private armed response companies, neighbourhood watches and all other relevant stakeholders.
- Repair all faulty streetlights along the beachfront as well as lights on the pier and walkways.
- CCTV cameras, back-up office and a response unit to be introduced along the beachfront.
The DA will deliver this plan to mayor Gary van Niekerk and request that he sees to its immediate implementation.
The DA has a plan to rescue Nelson Mandela Bay from the criminals that are holding it to ransom and get the Metro working again.
Regards
Cllr Gustav Rautenbach
