A verbatim transcription of the NMMU Students demands of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University is below:
SHORT TERM – DEADLINE NOVEMBER 2015
The student body of NMMU diagrees with any % increase but rather propose that fees remain at 0% increase furthermore for MANCO and Council to urgently convene and resolve on the 0% fee increment and send circular to the student body, and this must translate in residences and off campus.
The Student Body of NMMU requests that the enrolment fee not increase at 0% with the exception of the shuttle levy which will increase from R235 to R300 with the below conditions.
1. We acknowledge that the issue of outsourcing cannot be dealt with on immediate terms. We therefore demand that the following be looked into as a symbolic commitment to ending outsourcing in our institution.
i. An increase in salaries for our outsourced support workers – cleaners, grounds staff, maintenance and security officers. In addition to this NMMU needs to employ its outsourced staff on it’s own so that provision for medical aid can be made.
ii. Policy needs to be ammended to allow for service worker’s children to be allowed to study at NMMU without paying any fees.
iii. Access to the use of University Clinic Services.
2. The Vice-Chancellor must commit to making a call for the release of “2012 No Varsity Fees Report” as we are aware that he chaired the committee which contributed to the proposed free education model in the report.
3. The removal of Fedics as an outsourced food service provider for our on campus residences.
4. That the current payment structure for Afrikan students be altered, to one which provides that Afrikan nationals are to pay as local South African nationals do. This includes the removal of international levies for Afrikan nationals
5. We demand that the Vice-Chancellor remove the payment of sundry fees with the exception of registration fee however academically and financially needy students should be exempted from all these payments.
6. All debts accumulated by students in 2015 who were kicked of NSFAS must be wiped off with special consideration for final year students and graduates.
7. Commit by openly supporting free higher education in South Africa by putting pressure on Minister of Higher Education.
8. We demand that Council resolves on the issue of a tenth of the institution’s reserve be distributed yearly as a bursary at the next council meeting.
9. Radio Station Licence.
