Straton Electrical Open for Business:
On 5 March 2020, South African Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize confirmed that the COVID-19 virus had spread to South Africa, with the first known patient being a male citizen who tested positive upon his return from Italy. The first death to have occurred from the disease was reported on 27 March 2020.
On 15 March, the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, declared a national state of disaster, and announced measures like immediate travel restrictions and the closure of schools from 18 March.
On 17 March, Ramaphosa established the National Coronavirus Command Council, “to lead the nation’s plan to contain the spread and mitigate the negative impact of the coronavirus”.
On 23 March, a national lockdown was announced, starting on 26 March 2020.
On 27 March Straton Electrical began operating as an ‘essential service’ providing power and electrical contracting services to other essential services identified.
On 21 April, a 500 billion rand stimulus was announced in response to the pandemic.
In the interim businesses closed their doors and ceased trading, most employees received a smaller portion of their salaries and wondered if they would still have jobs at the end of the lockdown.
From 1 May 2020, a gradual and phased easing of the lockdown restrictions began, lowering the national alert level to 4.
From 1 June the national restrictions were lowered to level 3 allowing many businesses to ‘Open for Business’ again but tourism products, restaurants, pubs, hairdressers, personal care and similar businesses remained shut.
The provision of electrical power and the maintenance of the renewable energy grid is recognised as an essential service which Straton Electrical will now provide on a full time basis under Lockdown Level 3.
Straton Electrical‘s Michael Straton said; “It has been heartwarming to return to work and begin servicing our commercial and private clients. The backlog in electrical, solar and building automation work will soon be complete and we look forward to the resumption of normal activities once Level 1 is lifted.”
