Eastern Province Cricket President Donovan May today released a statement with regard to the status on the unresolved issue with regard to the winner of the 2016/2017 Premier League.
“The situation arose when the match between SA Homeloans Union and Jendamark United was called off by umpires on 21 January due to “dangerous pitch”. The matter was escalated and a Disciplinary Committee hearing was held on 15 March. The DC concluded after hearing submissions from both teams that the points should be shared. Jendamark United did not agree with the outcome and lodged an appeal.
The Appeals Committee met and with the evidence before them as guided by the playing conditions and by-laws upheld the original DC decision that points be shared. Gelvandale CC (70) were top of the points table with Jendamark United second (69) and was subject to change pending the finalization of this matter.
In the meantime, the CSA Club Championship provincial play off matches were due to be played last weekend (1 & 2 April) in Port Elizabeth and East London.
The winners of the T20 and 50 over provincial Premier League competition would then represent the Warriors at the 50 over Momentum Club Championship and the T20 CSA Community Cup.
However, as EP had not declared a winner, Mr Mark Williams, EPC CEO, as prescribed by the MOI, was tasked to negotiate with Gelvandale CC and Jendamark United to represent EP at these matches against Border.
CSA and Border were also approached and requested to move the games to a later date in order to allow EP to finalise the matter. Due to logistical matters the EP vs Border provincial playoffs could not be moved to another date.
The negotiations between the EP Clubs did not have a positive outcome and EP were not able to field teams against the Border league winners.
The MOI further prescribes should negotiations be exhausted an arbitration process should take place. Cricket South Africa have been asked for assistance in the arbitration process and will appoint an independent party to arbitrate on the matter.
“It is acknowledged that our dispute resolution mechanism is not conducive to resolving matters speedily. We want to make sure that the change programme embarked on last year will result in matters like this being resolved effectively.” said EP Cricket President Donovan May.
