It seems as though a storm is about to erupt around the allegations and rumours pertaining to the cash crisis that the EP Kings find themselves in.
Earlier today EPRU issued a statement – EP Rugby comment on Access Allegations – and the statement below just received from Access Management:
Access Facilities and Leisure Management Pty (Ltd) acknowledges having read the statement issued by the Nelson Mandela Bay Ratepayers Association titled “EP Kings cash crisis is true and real” on 09 November 2015.
Firstly, Access Management wishes to confirm that it was contracted by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro to operate the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium (NMB Stadium) and to assist its anchor tenants in whatever way possible.
Said contract which was until June 2015, was extended for one year, until June 2016, whilst the tender process for the awarding of the stadium operator contract is being dealt with by the Metro. There is no irregularity in respect of the process which the City has followed.
Any funds utilized by Access Management in the running of the stadium, are contained in an expense budget which is presented to and approved by council. This budget is submitted with all necessary documentation, as is required for proper governance.
The documentation which is being sought by NMBRA and Afriforum as referred to in their statement, is in the possession of the City and they are free to approach the city should they wish to obtain such information. In view of the fact that Afriforum has made an application to the High Court with regard to its allegation, Access Management is not required to provide the former with any documentation, unless ordered to do so by the High Court.
Access Management is audited annually by Grant Thornton Inc, a reputable international firm of Charted Accountants and each year, has received a clean audit.
In 2013, Access Management purchased the Commercial Rights in respect of the EP and Southern Kings from the Eastern Province Rugby Union. This has assisted us in building a commercial rights model (ticketing and hospitality) upon which the profitability of the EPRU can be maximized. This has made it possible for us to bring events such as test matches, the Sevens and Super Rugby to Port Elizabeth which, in turn, has had a major positive Economic Impact on the City.
