Dear Gqeberha,
All over the world this Saturday 16 September, tens of thousands of volunteers will gather on beaches and in cities in 150 countries to be part of International Coastal Clean-up day. Since its inception 36 years ago by Ocean Conservancy, thousands of tons of rubbish have been removed from our environment.
In South Africa, the Sustainable Seas Trust is the national coordinator of this event this year and mapped all the planned clean ups around the country. https://sstafrica.org.za/my_map/CleanSpot.html. Click on the blue turtle and know the time of the clean-up and the contact details of the coordinator.
In and around Gqeberha we have clean ups registered at: Maitland, Beachview, Seaview, Cape Recife, the Beacon (Summestrand), Pollock beach, Hobie beach, Bluewater Bay and Wells Estate.
In parallel, Marine Week takes place every year in October, aiming to raise awareness about the oceans, from conservation, to safety or even careers around the marine environment, to school kids and families. The event will take place at the Motherwell Enviro Hub on the 16th of October and at the Grootkloof Education Centre in Hillside the 17 to 19th. At this stage WESSA is looking for sponsors to fund a total of R22 800 for busses to transport pupils from 4 schools. Sponsors would be acknowledged appropriately. Please contact Karen Binning: binning@isat.co.za
Thank you very much in advance!
Regards,
Adj. Prof. Lorien Pichegru,
Institute for Coastal and Marine Research, Ocean Sciences Campus, Nelson Mandela University, Gqeberha, South Africa.
