The PE SAAF Museum have a number of restoration projects underway. Volunteers give of their time, expertise and material as they restore these old flying machines.
Don Bell writes:
The full size model of the Supermarine Spitfire MK-IX is streaming ahead speedily as can be seen from the images.
Rob Triblehorn and his faithful “hand-langers” have dedicated their time intensely in the last couple of months due to a generous financial donation.
The main wing structures are complete with functioning ailerons and the skins are now being fitted.
(Wikipedia: The aileron (French for ‘little wing’) is a hinged flight control surface usually forming part of the trailing edge of each wing of a fixed-wing aircraft)
Donations still required for further construction.
Airspeed Oxford restoration leader, Paul Stringer reports:
The Airspeed Oxford, currently being restored to a static display is continuing unabated with dedicated technicians hard at work.
The main wing fillets have been removed and are being stripped, cleaned and repainted; with some having to be patched due to vintage damage. The restored port wing fillets are already being refitted.
Unfortunately certain parts of the aircraft are missing which include 61mm aluminium pipes that form part of the cockpit heating system. If there is anybody that can assist with donating sections of such piping, please contact us.
Errol Stopforth and Fred Muller are doggedly persevering with moulding the two new main canopy Perspex roof sections and Errol must be commended for the time and effort he has invested in this to date. Errol and Fred deserve praise for their persistent endeavors in continually learning/experimenting with the technology behind moulding the canopy perspex halves. The intention is to use their gained expertise in moulding the individual perspex panes for the Gun Turret we eventually want to install in the dorsal position of the Oxford.
If any recipients of “Ox-Box” can contribute to the knowledge pool with moulding perspex, we would be eternally grateful.
