Dear Editor
As the legendary Frantz Fanon once opined along the lines that when the citizens cannot influence its very own government, then they tend to turn unto each other, I am therefore doffing my hat to the incumbent Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, for his quest to validate the current art of Spinning [and Drifting] as an actual mainstream sport.
The lawlessness in South Africa, especially the mindless shootings and often resultant killings, can be attributed to what Fanon pointed out as thus self-genocide. The saying that idle hands are the devil’s playground cannot be dismissed when talking about our copycat criminality all over the country.
New concepts as in the eventual officialdom of spinning & drifting could therefore be reducing aimlessness of our passionate, yet faithless and negatively overzealous youth that easily fall for the trappings of drugs and guns; primarily to fit in with their peers.
The sports ministry can in due course always rope in sponsors and private stakeholders to oil that sport’s proverbial cogs in order to stamp its credibility, authenticity and further expansion thereof. Bear in mind that Spinning & Drifting, and even Drag Racing, are mainly conducted in dermacated areas to curb unnecessary demand for accountability from law enforcement authorities. Economically, those said sports code would definitely attract Small & Medium Enterprises [SME] that often sell refreshments, clothing, souvenirs and even mini concerts are normally held during intervals, for example, the preparation of and/or repairs on the participants’ cars.
The ripple effects thereof would greatly benefit more than the immediate people involved in terms of job creation, boredom and crime reduction ; whom are seemingly having too much time on their hands and/or suffering from what the 19th century Russian philosophers would call … Bezdarnost … loosely meaning … talentlessness ….
