Spencer happy with Kings performance

The Southern Kings demonstrated a tighter running style of play in their 66-28 defeat of the Blue Bulls on Friday night in Port Elizabeth. The Southern Kings and Blue Bulls met in a friendly ahead of the start of the Currie Cup leg of the rugby season.

Whilst coach Carlos Spencer was very happy with his team scoring ten tries to the Bulls three he noted that the Kings still have a lot to work on as well; “Turnovers are still too high at the moment, our defence needs work with too many individuals falling off tackles and I thought we leaked soft tries,” said Spencer although “… overall we are still very happy” he concluded.

Carlos confirmed that he wants to play an expansive style of rugby and that the team would take a lot of confidence out of the win despite their opponents not being the A-Team.

Acknowledging that work needs to be done on exit work after kick-off Spencer said; “…we probably gave away 15 points.”

Shakes Soyizwapi came in for praise from the coach as he noted that it was great to see a player with so much talent like Shakes express himself off of the go-forward ball.

Hinting that a few players would come in for some individual attention Spencer said that; “… a few individuals let themselves down at points BUT the majority of the players played well.”

The Southern Kings may have a problem in the front row as Spencer’s preliminary report was that prop Simon Kerrod (who came in for Charl du Plessis – out after a neck strain against Wales) may have a torn pectoral muscle.
