Speak out against all violations of Women’s Rights

The Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (DAWN) is deeply distressed to read (EP Herald: 23 October 2015) that a complainant’s right to privacy and dignity have been violated in protest action at the PE Magistrates’ Courts.

After the horrors of our past, South Africa crafted a world class, rights based constitution.

This constitution is globally recognised as a driver of change, freedom and fairness  because it is principle driven and enshrines a Bill of Rights worthy of global status.

This means that the rights of every person in South Africa are constitutionally  protected.

Such protection includes the right to privacy and the legal principle that an accused is innocent until proven guilty.

It is indeed tragic that after 20 years of constitutional democracy, South African women, like the complainant in this and the Zuma rape case, are publicly harassed and pilloried.

East Cape DAWN stands for women’s right to freedom, fairness and opportunity.

East Cape DAWN cares and therefore calls on the government to demonstrate its commitment to women’s rights by speaking out against all gender based violence in South Africa.
