Southern Kings vs Blue Bulls

31 January 2012 By Alan Straton

Rugby in the Eastern Cape has once again become the tallest poppy in the field with the announcement that the Southern Kings will be playing Super Rugby in 2013. Many is the ‘foreign’ rugby supporter that believes that Eastern Province rugby doesn’t deserve this chance. And, many teams will be travelling down to our neck of the woods to try and show SARU that they ‘made a mistake’. No matter – this is frontier country this, we know how to fight battles and win.

Unlike last year, I am expecting the number of black and red supporters to surpass the number of blue supporters on Saturday.

Get your ticket from Computicket here. Adults – R70.00 and Children – R30.00. You could also make sure that you are on the MyPE Massive Deals e-mail list (scroll down to fill in form) to be in the running to get free tickets to the game on 4 February 2012 – kickoff at 5:00 pm.

The Southern Kings have three massive Super Rugby friendlies coming up:

  • 4 February – Blue Bulls at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
  • 11 February – Stormers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
  • 17 February – Sharks at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

With 6 players out for various reasons coach Alan Solomons announced his team for Saturday’s game as follows:

  1. Jaco Engels
  2. Hannes Franklin
  3. Clint Newland
  4. Darron Nell – his 1st stint at lock

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
