Southern Kings Super Rugby Player Squad

The Southern Kings announced their 35 man Super Rugby player squad today:

  • Forwards: Schalk Ferrreira, Jaco Engels, Hannes Franklin, Virgile Lacombe, Bandise Maku, Edgar Marutlulle, Kevin Buys, Grant Kemp, Steven Sykes, David Bullbring, Darron Nell, Rynier Bernardo, Daniel Adongo, Wimpie van der Walt, Mpho Mbiyozo, Tomas Leonardi, Cornell du Preez, Devin Oosthuizen, Luke Watson (Captain) and Jacques Engelbrecht
  • Backs: Shaun Venter, Johan Herbst, Nicolas Vergallo, Demetri Catrakillis, George Whitehead, Andries Strauss, Hadleigh Parkes, Ronnie Cooke, Waylon Murray, Michael Killian, Sergeal Petersen, Marcello Sampson, Siyanda Grey, SP Marais and Elric van Vuuren.

Following the announcement of the wider squad of 35 players today, Eastern Province Rugby President, Cheeky Watson, had the following to say with regards to the continuing inclusion of all five foreign players still listed in the squad; “The squad announced today is the wider squad that has been requested by SANZAR, and which had to be submitted to them ahead of the official start of the season, in line with their tournament rules and regulations. This squad could be reduced further in due course.”

Players dropped from the squad include; Ross Geldenhuys, Siviwe Soyizwapi, Wayne Stevens and Wesley Dunlop whilst Grant Kemp receive a callup to join the squad.

Director of Rugby, Alan Solomons explained his reasoning thus; “Ross Geldenhuys has been struggling a little with his form, and Grant Kemp has been called up in his place. Kemp has shown a lot of potential in what we have seen of him. There is something there and we feel he deserves the opportunity. George Whitehead and Wesley Dunlop are both good players, but the feeling was that George was slightly more versatile as he can play both wing and fullback. This versatility was a deciding factor and compliments the squad setup better.”

The team to play against Griqualand West at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Wednesday evening is:
