South African first for local dairy

1 October 2012 By Alan Straton

Coega Dairy – South Africa’s original eco-friendly dairy – has added another first to its name after receiving the ISO 22000 Food Safety System Certification (FSSC), food safety management accolade. The dairy is the first in South Africa to receive this honour.

Located in Zone 3 of the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) in Nelson Mandela Bay the dairy is one of its leading agro-processing investors.

“To be the first South African dairy to receive the sought after international ISO 22000 FSSC certification is an exceptional honour for us,” said Hennie Kleynhans, Coega Dairy chief executive, explaining the extent to which the dairy went to achieve global food health criteria. “Before certification we completed an audit for ISO 22000 HACPP accreditation, which required a paper trail and quality checks from the farmer to the household.”

Many standards have been developed within food safety, since achieving prominence on the global agenda. As such, a single standard with worldwide recognition was needed – and the ISO 22 000 FSSC was developed, said Willie Kok, Coega Dairy operational director.

“The ISO 22000 FSSC is the first international standard for implementation of a certified food safety management system. It covers Interactive Communication System Management and Hazard Control. This system is recognised internationally and includes ISO 22000:2005, ISO/TS 22002-1:2009 and additional FSSC 22000 requirements,” Kok said.

The certification is developed for the guarantee of food safety systems of organisations in the food chain that process or manufacture animal products, perishable vegetal products, products with a long shelf life, (other) food ingredients like additives, vitamins, bio-cultures and food packaging material manufacturing.

Coega Dairy is the first dairy in South Africa to invest in a plant design that is significantly more efficient than conventional ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk processing solutions available in other South African plants.

The new plant is one of the most modern UHT units, and one of the top green dairy plants in the world. The use of advanced “OneStep” technology creates substantial savings in terms of energy and water consumption, as well as improved production efficiencies, with the least impact to the environment.

“All our dairy goods are produced under one roof, and are tested and re-tested before it leaves the factory. Our factory has also been certified as Kosher and Halaal,” said Kok. “What this means to the consumer is outstanding value for your money and quality whenever you buy a Coega Dairy product.”

The dairy, which produces Coastal View UHT milk and butter, will also soon launch more value added products.

Ayanda Vilakazi, Coega Development Corporation head of marketing and communications said: “Since investing in the Coega IDZ, the dairy has produced exceptional results, from over delivering on environmental standards compliance, creating jobs, expanding operations, this accolade is another feather in the cap of one of our most successful investors.”
