There are stories which need to be told, one of them about the artist Claude Chandler. Born in a family of artists, Chandler is a South African contemporary artist, practicing in Cape Town. He is excited to announce he will be doing a painting residency culminating with an exhibition in Berlin, Germany in June / July 2022.
ARTsouthAFRICA will be facilitating this amazing collaboration which will take place between the 17 June and the 17 July 2022. The exhibition will open on Thursday, 7th of July and run in the final days of the residency which will end on Saturday, 16th of July 2022. Details of the opening in the information box below.
‘Space and Time’ is the title of this exhibition / residency of Claude Chandler: ‘In 2017 my wife and I travelled through Europe. We visited many countries during our stay but I ended it off with a short residency in Germany, Magdeburg. I worked with an artist who visited Cape Town years prior. That residency marked a huge growth and milestone in my artistic journey. Five years later I’m excited to revisit Germany, this time in Berlin for an artist residency and exhibition’ Claude says.
Claude Chandler’s last 5 years since visiting Germany have been extremely exciting, challenging and life changing. He got married, launched a fine art studio, got through the Pandemic/Lockdowns and most recently he became a father.
Art critic Jerry Saltz states: Having children is like being an artist. You live in Chaos, are aways lugging things around, doing things that are mysterious, impossible or scary to you. Then in a single second you can be redeemed with a moment of intense transformative love.
In our conversation the artist mentions that he is excited to experience another artist residence. Chandler comments further: ‘What is exciting for me with artist residencies is the unknown and the ability to absorb creatively from a new space and environment. There will be certain challenges and hurdles to overcome like working in an ‘alien studio’ away from my comfortable and familiar setup, but creativity always thrives in challenging times. I am looking forward to being inspired by the colours, light, people and spirit of Berlin, making sure those influences penetrate the canvas. I will also be creating a number of works before travelling, these might change when they live in a new space before the show or they will serve as a representation of the creative shifts from Cape Town to Berlin. I am looking forward to all the exciting people, places and art I will encounter in Berlin and if you are that side of the world please pop in and say hello.’
