Topless dancers performed for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on Wednesday as South Africa’s black townships turned out to greet her.

One of the Queen’s senior aides described her reception at New Brighton township near Port Elizabeth in Eastern Province as “one of the “great welcomes” she’s received.

But security was stepped up on Wednesday following chaotic
scenes when the Queen was mobbed by over-excited youths at Langa near Cape Town yesterday (Tuesday).

Port Elizabeth was not named after a forebear of today’s royal guest, but after Elizabeth Donkin, an early British settler.

Nonetheless the carpet was rolled out for Queen Elizabeth II.

Security was tight following chaotic scenes yesterday when the queen was mobbed by excited youths in a black township.

Mayor Nceba Faku – seen here dressed in the embroidered robe, head wrap and choker characteristic of his tribe – noted Britain’s influence.

Faku, is the first black mayor of a city founded by 19th century British
explorers. He said his people were looking … “to Great Britain as an economic giant to help transform our city.”

A traditional praise singer adorned in peacock feathers and antelope
skins greeted the queen when she arrived here in Port Elizabeth’s black township of New Brighton.

The Queen clapped and smiled at traditional dancers as hundreds of
people, many of them women in traditional head wraps and face
paint, waited outside for a glimpse of her.

Faku, a former political prisoner, was appointed mayor of this
Indian Ocean port last year as part of South Africa’s transformation
from apartheid to democracy.

Port Elizabeth is a community seeped in tradition with many connections to England- such as the Prince Alfred’s Guard seen here preparing for the visit.

“The British settlers landed here in 1820. And so it is wonderful the queen should be here. It is also wonderful that Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, and son of Queen Victoria came to the city and had a very significant visit- and the Prince Alfred’s guard was named after him.

Meanwhile, the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, visited Kimberley, a diamond mining center in the northwest.
