Social Pensioners Getting More Exercise Thanks to EL Golfers

23 February 2026 By Alan Straton

Residents of the Berea Gardens are sleeping more comfortably on new mattresses after a workout on an exercise bicycle or rowing machine and watching some television thanks to the golfers who participated in the annual Algoa FM Charity Golf Day.

Founded in 1974, Berea Gardens provides a home for SASSA pensioners who survive on R2 180 / month.

“One of my subsidized rental accommodation SASSA pensioners said after the bed was delivered that it was the best gift she had ever received in her entire life as the tears rolled down her cheeks,” says Berea Gardens’ Claire Neithercut.

“Another said, ‘I just want to say a very big thank you for my lovely bed. My back pain is so much better after only one night’s sleep. I have no words to express my gratitude’.

“A huge thank you to all the golfers at the Algoa FM Charity Golf Day!

“Your support means so much to Berea Gardens’ SASSA pensioners,” she says.

“It is an honour and a privilege to be able to make life more comfortable for people who contributed so much to society during their working years,” says Algoa FM managing director Alfie Jay.

“Every year the East London business community and golfers show how much they care about the people of their metro by the wonderful support they provide to the annual Algoa FM Charity Golf Day.

“Thank you for the very special day on the Algoa FM calendar”.

The next Buffalo City Algoa FM Charity Golf Day will be hosted at the East London Golf Course on Friday, July 4, 2026.
