Slow progress with IPTS refurbishment puts entire project at risk

The Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) project in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) has been stationary for nine months. As a result, hundreds of thousands of commuters from the Northern Areas have been forced to seek alternative forms of transportation.

Earlier today, Patriotic Alliance (PA) Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC), Bradley Murray, provided some insight as to the little progress they have made in getting the buses back on the road.

In August 2023 the entire project came to a grinding halt in an ostensible bid to refurbish the buses. The DA at the time warned that the refurbishment process could easily be undertaken without collapsing the service altogether, thereby preventing a risk of the permanent scrapping of the project by national government.

Since then the City has forfeited more than a R100 Million in conditional grant funding that should have been used to upgrade and further roll out the system. It is very clear that the current ANC/EFF/PA coalition of corruption is totally out of its depth in managing this project. They City requires urgent support from national government in order to get the project back on the road.

The DA will approach the National Department of Transport in a bid to request project management support for the IPTS project.

The IPTS project must urgently get back on track so that it can start to provide much needed transportation services to the people of the Northern Areas. The DA is in your corner fighting for you. Together we can get NMB working again.
