Simpiwe Vikilahle

18 September 2012 By Port Elizabethan

Join Port Elizabeth and MyPE in congratulating Mover and Shaker, Simpiwe Vikilahle from EC Talent:

Simpiwe Vikilahle is one of Nelson Mandela Bay’s top achieving young scriptwriters. The KwaZakhele-born artist is enjoying recognition for his work after winning an award at the Cape Town Zabalza Festival. This festival is run by the Baxter Theatre which aims to promote cultural diversity from different spheres of community including drama, music and scriptwriting.

The latest award adds more value to Vikilahle’s crown of accolades as playwright. He was nominated under several categories including best director, best actor/actress, best producer and best scriptwriter for the Zabalza Festival. He successfully claimed the best scriptwriter award for his production, “The Ghost House”.

More good news could still come Vikilahle’s way later in October this year as his script has been nominated amongst 40 scripts in another festival in Johannesburg.

Amongst his many other achievements, Vikilahle’s play “The Journey” ran for a week in the Opera House in 2009, and was then performed in the UK in 2010 during a tour with a Port Elizabeth arts organisation called the “Swallows”.

Despite his success in scriptwriting, Vikilahle sees himself as a director in the near future. “I’m happy with what I have achieved, but I would like to win an award as a director one day,” he says.

Like many other artists who were born and raised in Port Elizabeth, Vikilahle has considered leaving for “greener pastures.” “I feel that my work is now reaching other levels and wish to get a producer who can guide me professionally, even if that means leaving my place of birth Port Elizabeth,” says Vikilahle.
