Showcase: Keyboard Killers

Entertainer Ian von Memerty, is currently touring South Africa with his latest show, Keyboard Killers. Inspired by some piano greats, Ian von Memerty’s Keyboard Killers brings the magic of Freddy Mercury, John Legend, Cole Porter, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Noel Coward, Irving Berlin and Fats Waller to stages across South Africa.

For the past two years, he has entrusted Magnetic Storm’s lighting designer David Limbert to tour with him. Limbert, who is well-respected in his field and heads the creative services offering at Magnetic Storm, designed the lighting which is then adapted and recreated for the five theatres across the country.

On the inspiration for the lighting design, David says: “Keyboard Killers is show filled with music from an array of genres, and a mix of everything from Rock to classical, comedy to ragtime, and features over 80 songs from the eight featured songwriters, so the lighting design has to be very flexible to help enhance the mood of each piece.

Touring across the country, and using five venues, each poses its own challenges and the lighting will be adapted accordingly to ensure that the visual element of the show remains the same at each theatre.

Ian von Memerty adds: “Lighting is vital for any show it connects the audience with the artists, it creates energy and it sets the mood which was important for this show as we indulge the audience in different genres. I’ve worked with the Magnetic Storm team for many years and their professionalism, creativity and technical skill is always top notch.”
