Should PERCCI Change it’s Name?

28 January 2011 By Alan Straton

PERCCI

In 2010 media were invited to a ‘momentous event in the life of PERCCI’ and the open secret about this event was the impending name change of PERCCI (the Port Elizabeth Regional Chamber of Commerce).

Well, that was cancelled and PERCCI remained PERCCI.

With the city of Port Elizabeth joining Uitenhage and Despatch and becoming part of the Nelson Mandela Metropole the pressure on the high profile PERCCI organisation to change it’s name and become part of the new South Africa must have become pretty intense from a political point of view.

Of course when you are seen as largely part of the previous regime (read fat cat white) then the pressure is far more.

I appreciate that the present government must be seen to be eradicating the past and satisfying their supporters so the incorrect usage of geographic points becomes the accepted norm. And, this is where I think PERCCI need to be reminded – PERCCI is not a geographical point but an institution that has grown beyond it’s boundaries.

Even the Mayor and our Perfume Salesman are hinting at every opportunity that PERCCI is about to change it’s name.

So, if the name change is going to be a logical progression and change to something like ‘The Nelson Mandela Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry’ (NMBCCI) then I think that they are being a little short sighted. How about changing the name to something like the South African Chamber of Business – naah that one has been taken so I think that they will have to stick with my suggestion of African Business Chamber, or the ABC for short!

Of course many business men will tell you that the internet is the one medium that will make or break a business so we need to turn to Google and analyse quickly what the search trends are for; Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay or Africa to see which option PERCCI should choose:

Port Elizabeth:
Nelson Mandela Bay:
Africa:

To my PEA BRAIN it looks like Port Elizabeth is just pipped by the search for Africa. ABC (African Chamber of Commerce) – simple, easy to remember, I think I could get used to it!
