Shots fired at DA office

Just days after the ANC allegedly called for violence against DA armed men burst into the DA’s Ngqura Constituency Office in Kwazakhele on 6 February 2016 and fired a gun shot at DA activists and councillors before stealing countless cell phones and a bank card.

In what seems to have been a well-orchestrated operation targeted specifically at the DA, the armed men knew exactly which individuals to target in order to steal their bank cards.

This horrific event, in which countless lives were at serious risk, comes days after ANC MP Lulu Johnson allegedly announced at a funeral service in Port Elizabeth that those present, especially the youth, should go to the DA offices (“ioffisi zamabhulu”) in Njoli Street early in the morning or late at night to deal with the DA.

To make matters worse, at the same service ANC MEC Fikile Xasa and  ANC MP Tony Duba also allegedly declared that “the war had begun to defend the ANC branches” and that the ANC should protect the “elderly” from the unruly ill disciplined “Youth”/DA. He also allegedly said that the “blue t-shirts are not wanted where we live, they are not the solution.”

The timing of this life-threatening incident is extremely suspicious, given the recent alleged utterances of these ANC public representatives, and prompts tough questions as to whether their alleged comments led to this criminal act.

I have written to the IEC in the Eastern Cape to ask for an immediate and urgent investigation into these ANC public representatives’ alleged comments, which contravene our electoral act and code of conduct and amount to incitement of violence.

It is clear that the ANC is threatened by the huge inroads the DA is making in traditional ANC strongholds. The people of South Africa are turning their backs on an ANC government that has for too long abandoned service delivery, engaged in corrupt activities and destroyed jobs.

The DA is not intimidated by these incited acts of violence and will continue to surge towards victory at this year’s local government election.
