Across the board all municipal services have increased in price well above the rate of consumer price inflation over the past 10 years, making it clear that affordability is not a priority in the current system.
The South African Reserve Bank reported the following increases in municipal services costs over the ten-year period from 2010 to 2020 (during which period the increase in headline consumer inflation was 68 per cent):
- Rates and taxes: +118 per cent
- Electricity: +177 per cent
- Water: +213 per cent
It would seem that the ‘Circle of Chaos’ is not confined to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality only but across every other Municipality in the country too – increases of close to 300% over and above the CPI rate are usurious to say the least!
