Shark Slaughter – Not Cool for Port Elizabeth

Essentially:

Jens Höptner, on his seventh trip to South Africa, spent some time in our neck of the woods seeing marine wildlife was shocked to see a long line fishing boat hauling sharks out of the sea.

Jens, after seeing and photographing a “terrible thing” was moved to write to the ECPTA questioning why such ‘wholesale slaughter’ of this apex predator was allowed.

The Port Elizabeth based fishing vessel, Suiram VH, is owned by Sharmilla van Heerden of Fisherman Fresh who, in a 26 March 2015 article in The Herald, stated; “…. we make sure that we target non-endangered species of sharks. We export them to Australia where shark products such as fillets are in great demand.”

If only our ECPTA Official had replied sooner to Jens – we now have a little bit of an embarrassment on our hands.
