Save Our Savoy

20 July 2021 By Alan Straton

We all have wonderful memories of entering a darkened theatre and being transported to a world of fantasy and light – a joyous world, a world full of eager youth, veteran thespians and promise of a better, kinder and more loving life.

But, many of us forget that sense of joy and wonder and MORE SPECIFICALLY just where that came from.

One of those places for me is the Savoy Theatre – I have watched many a play and musical presentation there and been thrilled at the performers, technical and support staff’s dedication to their craft – most times not in exchange for filthy lucre but just for the joy of bringing joy.

And now the Savoy Theatre in Ward 7 is in Dire Straits as the following post from Facebook indicates:

They say the it’s always darkest before the dawn and we’re hoping the sun rises very soon. Here at the Savoy we are in DIRE STRAITS!

Like every other theatre in the world we have been devastated by successive lockdowns and restrictions. We desperately need our G&S family and friends to come together like never before and save the day!

With your donation, however large or small, you can:

  • HELP keep the doors open
  • HELP us continue putting on amazing shows
  • HELP nurture and develop the wonderful local talent
  • HELP train more incredible technicians
  • HELP mentor the next generation of theatre makers
  • HELP keep on our wonderful staff
  • HELP US CELEBRATE OUR 90TH ANNIVERSARY in 2022!

Please take a moment to visit the Save or Savoy Back a Buddy page and make the choice to donate whatever you can afford – every cent helps!

We will be fighting on the ground here in Gqeberha to make sure that we’re ready to rise like the phoenix once our doors can open – we just need you join the fight in whatever way you can.

The Savoy Theatre is offering free lessons on how to pronounce Gqeberha to anyone from overseas who donates $50 or more!!!

Thank you to all the supporters and G&S family all over the world for your support.

Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
