Dear Editor
It is becoming more evident that the Nelson Mandela Bay’s Economic Paralysis is mostly caused by the indifference and oppression of the very same people who are controlling its purse strings; meaning corporate citizens and politicians alike.
To cut a long story short, since I don’t have any financial nor political clout to make it happen, yours truly has been publicly advocating for a Sasol Delight! or BP outlet to be built on the prime spot that connects Algoa Road and Mel Brooks Avenue in Kariega since 2014. That slab-walled site, which is situated next to the unmissable landmarks like the Volkswagen A-Plant foundry, Market Square car dealership, Swartkops River and diagonally across the Volkswagen’s PeoplePavilion recreational centre, sits idle whilst it could be creating the much-needed jobs and stimulate economic activity around that area; especially when it could be supplemented by the likes of Tiger Wheel & Tyre, Supa Quick vehicle fitment centre and eateries that are not represented in Kariega like Nando’s and Mugg & Bean.
The municipality can therefore fund the building of a foot bridge that would fly over the Swartkops River towards and from the Peter Searle Drive for pedestrians, especially those who have parked their cars on either side of the river. Tourism around Kariega would therefore be given the proverbial economic short-in-the-arm as that vicinity’s vibrancy would stop being largelly reliant on Volkswagen’s coal face workers’ clocking in-and-out during shift change-overs.
Lest we forget, the sooner the advocates of the repetitive and unnecessary Kariega name-change fiasco stop with their Nazi-mentality, which is actually some jealousy-driven spiteful social engineering, the better the chances of putting aspirant investors at ease to invest in the legendary Garden Town as they would have confidence that their return-on-investment won’t come in the form of Black & Coloured Bigots’ fuelled anarchy.
