The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) and Port of Ngqura jointly received a Gold Award for ‘Medium Organisation with a High Environmental Impact’ in the acclaimed Top Green Organisation Awards ceremony held last week at Hemmingways Hotel in East London

The competition was coordinated and sponsored by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) in partnership with the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA).

The Top Green Organisation Awards, launched in 2009 recognises the achievements of organisations that comply with legislation, environmental management principles, and green economy initiatives such as waste management, biodiversity and quality just to mention a few.

Judges of the awards comprised of people with extensive knowledge and experience in the subject matter and included:

  • Lead Auditor – Mr Water Fyvie from Gibb
  • Mrs Cecilia Gyan from DEDEAT
  • Mrs Hlomela Ntsini from DEDEAT
  • Miss Bathabile Songxaba from DEDEAT

Entrants were shortlisted, and results were audited by the professional members of DEDEAT and IWMSA to determine winners. Viwe Biyana, CDC’s unit head of safety, health, environment and quality said, “following the CDC’s entrants and motivation for the award, the audit team from IWMSA and DEDEAT visited CDC premises to verify relevant CDC systems, processes and projects. The audit went very well with the support gained from all the SHEQ staff and project managers.”

Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC head of marketing and communications said: “Winning these awards recognises hard work and commitment from our employees and the leadership of the organisation. We are not in the business of awards, we are in the business of socio-economic growth, but of course recognition from stakeholders and industry is important and ensures that to keep doing the work we do, every day.”
