Collage - SAPS vs ProgressThe Longhair and I toddled off to watch the SAPS take on Progress in the Eastern Cape Super 12 Rugby Championships final on Saturday 26 March at the Kemsley Park Stadium.

The Kemsley Park grounds have certainly suffered in the drought and are hard, unforgiving and dusty – not the type of field you want to be tackled on by huge SAPS Rugby players.

Gutsy tackling and hard running saw the dust rising like a haze over the field.

SAPS ran out winners by beating Progress 22-10, having drawn first blood and leading throughout the game. The Progress side certainly didn’t lack for imagination and were constantly on the attack – but, their basic skills let them down with too many dropped passes and lack of support smothering every imaginative attack. For the SAPS, Justin Peach at flyhalf kicked steadily and accurately to ensure that the SAPS stayed ahead.

The Super 12 Rugby Championships saw 6 teams from EP and 6 teams from border competing for the title and R50 000.00 in prize money. Second placed Progress took home R25 000.00, runners up, African Bombers pocketed R10 000.00 and each of the other teams received R5 000.00 each.

Next season the championship will continue in the same format.
