A head mistress in the Eastern Cape is “happy and excited” because SANRAL is improving the safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs) through integrated road infrastructure development and safety transport projects along the R61.

In Libode, a village between Mthatha and Port St. Johns, a new pedestrian bridge will finally provide safety to 1 200 school children while offering peace of mind and solace for their parents, families and teachers.

The bridge forms part of a R263 million road infrastructure development and road safety programme through the upgrading of 13 nodes along the R61 between St Patricks Mission intersection and the town of Libode over a distance of 21.5 km.

Veronica Mabutay, head mistress of Libode’s Mount Nicholas Junior Secondary School, says there were to three to four accidents involving schoolchildren every year. The school children have to cross the R61.

The development, she says, has made her happy and excited as the safety of her learners has been improved.

According to Libode Ward Councillor Phila Godongwana the project will introduce important long-term benefits for the local economy.

“We appreciate the development taking place in this area, because SANRAL is reducing the number of accidents and deaths. We were patiently waiting for this project and we are happy.

“The rate of unemployment is decreasing now since SANRAL was appointed here by the government to develop this area. We are truly beneficiaries of this project. SANRAL is boosting the local economy of our region. Even through the SMME development and employment, this is a huge boost for us.”
