SAIMI hosts Annual Imbokodo in Maritime Conference in Gqeberha

The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) is hosting its annual Imbokodo in Maritime Conference on the 30 th of August 2023 at the Nelson Mandela University Ocean Sciences Campus in Gqeberha. The Institute celebrates this event in the month of August every year to join the rest of the country in paying tribute to the women of South Africa.

As an advocate for the development and transformation of the maritime sector, SAIMI has initiated and supported various initiatives and programmes to uplift and capacitate South African women in the sector. Accordingly, these initiatives have also inspired the theme for this year’s event, “Industry Innovation: Women Pioneering Technological Advancements in Maritime”.

As we are experiencing the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) that includes the advent and convergence of the rapid advancement of technologies, the Institute seeks to ensure a level playing field that shares best practices and includes women in Maritime technology and innovation. It is vital for the young women of our country to be inspired to pursue a career in maritime. SAIMI believes that through this event, it provides an ideal platform to showcase Maritime career opportunities with an important focus on technology and innovation. The 4IR brings about new career opportunities and it is essential that the youth of South Africa are equipped with the tools to follow these without any barriers such as work readiness skill sets and gender inequality.

Other objectives that the event seeks to achieve is to create a platform that recognises women’s achievements and milestone in the industry, to foster knowledge sharing and networking opportunities among women professionals and stakeholders in the Maritime industry, to celebrate Women’s Month by recognizing the accomplishments and leadership of women in the industry, and to ultimately raise awareness about the importance of gender diversity and inclusion in the Maritime industry.

The two-part event will start with the main conference that will focus on Women Pioneering Technological Advancements in Maritime developments and progress, followed with an Awards evening ceremony to recognize women making waves within the industry as well as entities focused on empowering woman under the following categories.

  1. Best Woman in Maritime Business
  2. Making waves as a Newcomer
  3. Leading Entity in Women Empowerment
  4. SHEROES in the Sector
  5. Most Influential
  6. Best Mentor
  7. Star Performer
  8. Most contributor in Research and Knowledge in the Sector
  9. Women in Tech

The Institute looks forward to hosting a diverse audience consisting of women professionals already working in the maritime sector, especially those involved in technological advancements and innovation, representatives from government agencies and maritime organizations, students, graduates and young professionals interested in pursuing careers in the maritime industry as well as entrepreneurs and start-ups.
