Dear MyPE
After revealing on the 20th June 2016 that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) had lied to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on the status of sanitation in Walmer Township, the DA can now confirm that the SAHRC is considering taking action against the municipality.
In a written reply, SAHRC Chairperson, Adv. Lawrence Mushwana, confirms that “further advices” will be communicated on “actions we (SAHRC) intend taking”.
We support the SAHRC’s intention to intervene on this matter, given that the municipality attempted to sweep the bucket toilet crisis under the carpet, through lies and deceit.
Service delivery in the Bay has ground to halt because the ANC has given up on our people. For two decades, more than 100 000 residents have suffered under the bucket toilet system, with six consecutive ANC mayors having turned their backs on this crisis.
Only the DA has the capacity to deliver change that takes our Metro forward again. Where the DA governs, residents have the highest access to sanitation and water at 96.4% and 98.9%, respectively. By spending every cent of every budget on the people, the DA efficiently redresses the legacy of our past by consistently delivering quality services.
We want to tell the same story in Nelson Mandela Bay, which can become a reality if residents vote for change.
The DA is committed to ensuring that potholes are fixed, municipal roads and infrastructure are maintained and residents have access to electricity, potable water and sanitation.
42% of all illegal dumpsites are made up of construction rubble, which encourages the dumping of domestic waste on existing illegal dumpsites. This multiplier effect is having a catastrophic impact on the cleanliness of our Metro. The DA will roll out weekly area cleaning projects and enforce municipal by-laws, with a zero-tolerance approach, to rid our Metro of the scourge of litter and illegal dumping.
We will ensure that the 80 000 housing backlog is reduced through proper budgeting and the commissioning of competent and efficient contractors.
For those residents on housing waiting lists, which will be public documents available at all municipal offices, we will prioritise the upgrading of informal settlements and the provision of serviced sites so that all residents can access basic services.
The DA can win Nelson Mandela Bay at this year’s local government election, to usher in a government focused on improving service delivery and stopping corruption.
Regards
