Safer Summer Swimming with Aunty Bubbles

Children and adults can get a jump-start on their summer holidays with “Aunty Bubbles” who will be giving swimming classes at MacArthur Baths from Thursday to Friday, December 10 to 18.

Water safety is paramount during the summer months, both for people living at the coast and visitors to coastal resorts. In addition swimming pools, rivers and dams require thought and care to avoid problems.

“Water is a big part of our lives,” says Lerryn Mew, known to her swimming students as Aunty Bubbles. “In preparation for summer I present a holiday club every year at the MacArthur Baths facility for both children and adults of all swimming abilities.”

“Swimming is a vital life-skill, something everyone should be able to do. While it should be a required skill for everyone to have, there is no reason it shouldn’t be fun and also an enjoyable pastime.”

These classes take a number of forms, with a focus on fun and swimming – learning about water and water safety. Participants don’t need to be able to swim well, or even at all, to be  a part of the club.

“Responsible water use is important both for the supervising adults and the swimmers,” says swimming instructor Mew. “Part of the swimming club is understanding how to be responsible for your own safety in the water, helping to ease some of the burden on those watching.”

“Swimming and other water-based sports are great recreational activities, but safety must always be considered – and so often things happen far too quickly. The aim of the holiday club is to help children and adults start off their summer season on a positive note – and help them be more aware of water safety.”
