The Music Society of Port Elizabeth says that their next concert is very special and definitely the chamber music highlight of the year as you will hear a Russian, a South African and an American working together in harmony. Only in music is that possible.
The three members of TRIO ELEGIAQUE are Sergey Malov (violin), Peter Martens (cello) and Bryan Wallick (piano). They will play for the PE Music Society on Wednesday, 21 September 2016, in the NMMU south campus Auditorium. The concert will start at 19h30.

After receiving degrees from both the University of Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin, Sergey Malov went on to win major competitions on two instruments: the violin (Heifetz 2008, Mozart 2010, Michael Hill 2011) and the viola (Tokyo 2010).
His interest in historically informed performance practices led him to study the Baroque violin and more recently the violoncello da spalla. Today he successfully combines all these instruments in recitals, concerts, and recordings.
Sergey Malov speaks six languages fluently: his mother tongue is Russian and Hungarian, as well as English, German, French and Spanish.

Peter Martens holds a Masters Degree from the University of Cape Town and a PhD from Stellenbosch University where he studied in his formative years with Dalena Roux before studying with Heidi Litschauer at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 1993 Peter returned to South Africa and occupied principal positions in the New Arts Philharmonic Pretoria and Cape Philharmonic before moving to Stellenbosch University where he currently holds the position of Director of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival.
He is a member of the Amici String Quartet, enjoys chamber music with amongst others, Leon Bosch (double bass), David Juritz (violin), Benjamin Schmid (violin) and Leslie Howard (piano), and has performed with the Brodsky String Quartet in London. He is married with two children to violinist, Suzanne Martens.

Bryan Wallick is gaining recognition as one of the great American virtuoso pianists of his generation. Gold medalist of the 1997 Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev, he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and South Africa. Dr. Wallick made his New York recital debut in 1998 at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and made his Wigmore Hall recital debut in London in 2003. He has also performed at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall with the London Sinfonietta and at the St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church with the London Soloist’s Chamber Orchestra.
Bryan studied with Jerome Lowenthal in New York City where he was the first Juilliard School graduate to receive both an undergraduate Honors Diploma (2000) and an accelerated Master’s Degree (2001). He continued his studies with Christopher Elton in London at the Royal Academy of Music where he was the recipient of the Associated Board International Scholarship, receiving a Post-graduate Diploma with Distinction, and previously studied with Eugene and Elizabeth Pridonoff at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. George Plimpton’s feature article on Bryan Wallick appears in the March 2002 edition of Contents magazine.
For their Port Elizabeth concert they have chosen to play three of the biggest and most sublime piano trios in their repertoire:
- Rachmaninov – Trio elegiaque No. 1 in G minor,
- Shostakovich – Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67
- Tchaikovsky – Trio in a minor, Op. 50
The ticket prices are: ADULTS – R85.00, PENSIONERS – R70.00, STUDENTS – R35.00, SCHOLARS – R30.00
Tickets will be sold at the door.
