Editor: I still believe that the Red Location has the power to draw many foreign tourists to Port Elizabeth and cannot understand why the powers that be are still dilly dallying around opening the museum up again – a crying shame people, a crying shame.
The footage for this video was taken over a couple of days spent in New Brighton township as part of Winter School 2013 – a 3-week artistic residency in South Africa bringing 10 artists from the UK and 10 from South Africa to collaborate and exchange culturally and creatively.
I made this video because I wanted to share what I was seeing and experiencing throughout the trip but most importantly during the time spent in New Brighton, which was by far the most inspirational and reflective visit of my life.
After questioning the use of Breakin’ and digital media in the era of countless “bboy travel videos” I have decided that it is perfectly ok to use this medium for as long as it delivers the message…
The video is dedicated to Khunjuzwa Nongqokwana, a mother from the township who was so kind to show us her home and share some of her story.
I hope this is a subtle reminder about the world stretching beyond our comfort zones and as distant as it may appear, the world is still one.
Thank you to all who made this experience real
