Rugby Springboks to Cook for Charity

12 August 2011 By Alan Straton

Rugby Springboks will be donning their aprons in Port Elizabeth just before the World Cup to raise funds for charity.

In addition to preparing dishes from the latest Springboks in the Kitchen Cook Book, they will be discussing the team selection and strategies the night before the start of the Rugby World Cup, which is being held in New Zealand from September 9 to October 23.

The team of former Springboks will be cooking in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Indoor Sports Centre on Thursday September 8.

The starter will be a “True Taste of the South African Braai,” prepared by local Springbok Garth Wright . This will be teamed with Bakkies Botha’s Cheese and Bacon Bread on the table.

The main will be Andries Bekker’s Peppered Fillet Steak in the scrum with Andre Venter’s Mushroom Sauce  and Jaque Fourie’s Potato Bake. For dessert there will be Os du Randt’s Peppermint Crisp Fridge Tart Garnished with Lindt chocolate.

Big Schalk Burger senior will also be there reminiscing about his experiences with the Springbok team. Two other undisclosed Bokke will be joining him.

Beneficiaries from the 2011 Springboks Cooking for Charity evening will be the Eastern Province Children’s Home, MTR Smit, and Child Welfare SA Eastern Cape. In 2007, over R235 000 was raised by a Springboks Cooking for Charity dinner in Port Elizabeth.

“Once again, business in the Metro has opened its hearts to the project, and have sponsored the food and wine. As a result, most of the proceeds will be going directly to charity,” says convenor Garth Wright.

The sponsors include Fedics, Magnetic Storm, Angelic Wonders, Siyathetha Communications, and The Boardwalk

Tickets are R500 each, which includes wine from Meridian Wines. Tickets can be obtained from any the three charities or from Maureen Dalzell on 041 582 3750 or 083 453 5775.

Left to Right: Terry Hattingh EP Children's Home, Clifford Ngakane GM The Boardwalk, Garth Wright and Cedric de Reuck (The Boardwalk)

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
