Route and road closures for the 2019 Africa Cup

2 October 2019 By Alan Straton

The 2019 Africa Cup will kick off with the riders facing four race days from 10-13 October 2019. The routes will showcase Nelson Mandela Bay’s diversity. This ensures the cyclists will get to experience a rich assortment the city has to offer and that there are the maximum opportunities for spectators to watch the race.

Race days

Mixed Relay – New Brighton – Road affected 10am – 2pm

Day 1 – October 10, 2019 – Thursday – The first day will see a mixed relay with cyclists following a route in New Brighton. The route starts on Ntshekisa Road, before proceeding to Ferguson Road. The riders then continue down Ferguson and turn left into Singapi Street. Singapi Street becomes Avenue C before turning left into Gunguluza Street. The riders will continue to pass the finish line once again on Ntshekisa Road, in front of the Nangoza Jebe Hall. All intersections on this route will be closed to traffic between 10am – 2pm on the day.

Individual Time Trial – Summerstrand – Road affected 9am – 1pm

Day 2 – October 11, 2019 – Friday – This is an out and back route along Marine Drive, starting and finishing opposite the Humewood Golf Course. The women race a distance of 20 kilometres while the men will do 32.2 kilometres. The men’s field turnaround will be in Schoenmakerskop.

Criterium – Lorraine Primary School – Road affected 12:30am – 2pm

Day 3 – October 12, 2019 – Saturday – Following the annual Lorraine Cycle Tour in the morning, Africa Cup cyclists will join in the festival atmosphere and partake in a spectator friendly criterium race. The race will start on Dijon road, turn right onto Meuse Avenue, right onto Lourdes Avenue, proceed to Marne Avenue before rejoining Dijon road for a circuit making up 1.6 kilometres.

Road Race – Park Drive, St Georges Park – Road affected 6am – 3pm

Day 4 – October 13, 2019 – Sunday – This racing festival will culminate in a challenging route for both the men’s and women’s field, making it one of the best spectator friendly routes in the city. The race will commence on Park Drive before turning right into Brickmakers Kloof Road, turn right into Upper Valley Road, turn left into Weber Road, right into Andersen Road before proceeding onto Walmer Boulevard to head to the CBD. The route follows South Union Street onto Victoria Quay Street, turning left onto Goven Mbeki Avenue, proceeds right onto Military Road, Athol Fugard Terrace, then left into Western Street, across Rink street and back in to Park Drive, circumventing the park to the start/finish near the bowling club.

The public is advised to take note of these road closures and to plan accordingly for possible traffic time delays.
