RIP Celeste Barker

It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that the Democratic Alliance (DA) marks the passing of Celeste Barker, an Eastern Cape party stalwart and fierce advocate for the rights of women and children. She passed away yesterday at the age of 64.

Celeste was a long-serving Provincial Chairperson of the DA Women’s Network, for eight years, having been first elected to the position in 2010. She had also formerly served as a dedicated Member of the Bhisho Legislature.

She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to the cause and her fighting spirit. As a defender of women’s rights, she made an indelible impact in the fight against violence toward women and children.

As South Africa approaches the start of 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women and children on 25 November 2024, we are reminded of how Celeste stood and fought for the most vulnerable in our society.

Celeste was indeed a stalwart and joined the former Democratic Party in 1995, which merged into the DA in 2000.

She started working as a political rights activist from 1979 and was also a member of the Black Sash. Between 1955 and 1994, the Black Sash provided widespread and visible proof of white resistance towards the apartheid system

Our hearts go out to Celeste’s family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by her commitment to creating a free, fair, and safe Eastern Cape for all women and children.

May she rest in peace, knowing that the fight for the rights of women and against gender-based violence continues, now more than ever.

We honour the legacy she leaves behind – one that will continue to inspire future generations to fight for the rights of women and children.
