The Wilderness Foundation has expressed its shock and frustration at the recent poaching of 5 rhino in the Eastern Cape during two separate incidents and are calling on members of the public to come forward to provide information that could lead to the arrest of those involved.
The number of rhino poached in South Africa has increased from 13 in 2005 to 1 215 in 2014 and the number killed in 2015 already stands at more than 110.
The Wilderness Foundation believes that rhino poaching will only be addressed through the collective efforts of rhino owners, law enforcement agencies and the public. In this light, the Wilderness Foundation, through the Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative and the Wildlife Operations Group, has offered a R50 000 reward for information leading to the successful arrest of those involved in this or any other rhino poaching in the Eastern Cape region.
Information is also requested that will prevent further poaching incidents and lead to the arrest of those planning such acts. If the public have any information that can assist in the apprehension of these perpetrators, they are to contact the wildlife crime and anti-poaching Tip-off Line. The number is 078 696 9494.
