Repeated call for 24-hour traffic law enforcement

16 September 2015 By Port Elizabethan

Dear MyPE

The DA repeats its call to Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana for the immediate implementation of a shift-system for 24-hour traffic law enforcement on Eastern Cape roads. Last night four people, including two children died in another horror car crash, on the Addo Road. My heart goes out to the families.

The red tape in applying Resolution 14 of 2009, made between the Department of Roads and Transport, the Public Service Association (PSA) and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru), cannot be tolerated any longer.

The loss of family members, children and breadwinners has a devastating effect on our communities. Two weeks ago over 40 people lost their lives in tragic accidents in Willowvale and in Cradock.

Freedom means being able to use roads without the fear of unlawful road users whose behaviour puts their own lives and those of others in danger. MEC, give our people the opportunity to get into a vehicle knowing that there is proper law enforcement on the roads, 24-hours a day.

A safe and secure transport network is necessary for a growing economy.

I will be submitting questions for oral reply to MEC Tikana, at the next sitting of the legislature in October, during the “Taking the Legislature to the People” in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. She must tell the citizens of the province whether Resolution 14 of 2009 will be implemented and if so when, and if not why and what measures she will be taking.

On behalf of the DA I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families that lost loved ones in this latest road accident. We wish God’s richest blessings and speedy recovery to the victims who are in hospital.

Regards

Marshall von Buchenroder
