The Johannesburg marketplace matches advertisers with painted walls, wraps, billboards and hoardings, and helps property owners list unused frontage.
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – A blank gable wall above a busy Braamfontein street earns its owner nothing, and the brand that wants that street’s foot traffic usually has no idea who owns the wall. RentThisWall, a Johannesburg outdoor advertising marketplace, has gone live with a directory of outdoor ad spaces that puts the two sides in touch, with sites in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Bloemfontein.
Formats on the books
Listings cover painted wall sites, vinyl wall wraps and breathable mesh building wraps, small, standard and large billboards, double-sided boards, bridge banners and fence banners. There is construction hoarding, mall and retail centre walls, corner buildings, high-rise walls, warehouse gable walls and factory perimeter walls along industrial streets. Large billboards typically offer about 18 to 36 square metres of display, lit or unlit depending on the site’s power supply. Hoarding panels around building sites usually stand 2 m, 2.4 m or 3 m high and run in modular sections that follow the boundary.
Consent and bylaws come first
Every listing carries the same condition: signage needs the property owner’s consent and local municipal bylaw approval before anything goes up. RentThisWall gives guidance on confirming consent, helps prepare for the bylaw process and checks campaign artwork against the listed dimensions and installation needs before it goes to print.
“The fastest way to lose a month is to print the artwork before anyone has checked the wall,” said RentThisWall’s campaign coordinator. “We look at mounting access, the viewing angle and what the surface will take, whether that’s vinyl, flex face or paint, and we confirm who pays for the electricity on a lit site. On an illuminated board, power cuts have to be in the plan from day one.”
For property owners
Owners with a suitable wall, fence or billboard structure can list it with help on site photos, plain-language descriptions and availability calendars. The team matches advertiser briefs to listed spaces, coordinates bookings and installation dates, and monitors live campaigns with visual checks for the length of the display period.
Advertisers and owners can start on the RentThisWall website.
